How can I get my fibre installed underground?

Broadband

In most cases the local fibre company (such as Chorus) will follow the current method of service connection to your home. If your phone line for example is currently connected to your home via overhead lines, the fibre will usually also be connected in this way.

The majority of fibre connections are either aerial overhead lines or surface mounted (along fence rails for example) rather than installed completely underground.

I want fibre installed at my place, and would like it to be underground

Make sure when you order your fibre that you tell us that you’re wanting underground install of the fibre if at all possible.

Our provisioning team will relay this to the local fibre company who will be tasked with installing the infrastructure.

They’ll need to send out a technician to assess where your current services are located and look at the pros and cons of each install method.

You can discuss with them your preferred route for the fibre, and suggested path for the trench and ducting that is needed.

I already have some underground ducting, can the fibre go through there?

Depending on the location of the ducting, its condition, and what types of services you have running through the existing ducting, it may be able to be used for your fibre installation.

The technician should be able to assess whether it is suitable for fibre or not.

Will it cost extra to install fibre underground?

The free standard install included with fibre installation essentially aims to cover a cost effective install method such as following existing services.

If you choose to opt for an underground installation method this can indeed incur some additional cost, and this can be determined before the install proceeds.

The additional costs arise from the extra materials and time required from install crews to complete the work. This is especially true where trenching is required, as depending on the trenching situation that can take considerable time to complete (whereas above ground installs can often be completed in a few hours).

How can I reduce the cost involved with installing fibre underground?

Once a suitable underground fibre install path is agreed upon, in many cases if you carry out the trenching work this can substantially reduce the additional charges.

I already have fibre installed overhead, but want to move it underground

This is possible in most cases, however it will incur cost from the local fibre company who carries out the work. These costs do vary, but can be reduced by digging the trench along the fibre install path that is agreed upon.
