How to call Australia from New Zealand

Voice

While phoning international numbers is second nature to many of us, it can be a confusing process to those who have rarely phoned overseas before.

Naturally one of the most common countries that New Zealanders need to make an international call to is Australia.

So let’s look at how to make the call – and any things to watch out for.

Also, if you’re looking for a great cloud business phone service, we’ve got you covered!

How to call an Australian landline from NZ

Simply dial the NZ international access code (00), then the Australian country code (61), followed by the regional area code (with no leading zero), and then the phone number you’re trying to reach.

00 + 61 + area code (with no leading zero) + phone number

To expand on the above instruction, it will no doubt help to go through a real world example.

An example:

Let’s say we’re wanting to call Australia Zoo…

On their website they list their landline phone number as “+61 7 5436 2000”.

The “+” symbol means to put in your international access code (which in NZ is “00”), and they have helpfully already included their Country and Area codes in their number.

So in this case we would simply dial 00 61 7 5436 2000 to reach them.

Note: If the Zoo had instead only listed their number with their Australian visitors in mind (which many people/businesses do), then it would be shown on their website as 07 5436 2000.

To be able to dial this from NZ, we would need to add our international access code “00”, then the Country Code of “61”, and drop the leading zero from the “07” area code to get to the same number as described above.

How to call an Australian mobile from NZ

Calling a mobile number in Australia from New Zealand follows the same process as calling a landline, except that instead of dropping the leading zero from the area code, we need to do this for the start of the mobile number.

00 + 61 + mobile phone number (with no leading zero)

Let’s dig into what this would look like…

An example:

Most mobile numbers in Australia start with 04 or 05.

So if the person you’re trying to reach in Australia has a mobile number of 0411 222 333, you’d need to add our international access code, the Australian country code, and drop the leading zero from the mobile number.

This would give you the international mobile number to dial from NZ of:

00 61 411 222 333
