What sorts of reasons do people have for moving an ONT?

You might have just moved into your home, and you have your home laid out differently to the previous tenant, and the current ONT location can be improved.

Or perhaps you’re about to be undergoing extensive home renovations in one area of the house, and want to move the ONT elsewhere to allow your broadband to continue functioning over this time.

Can I move the ONT myself?

No unfortunately moving the ONT and its delicate fibre cabling is likely to cause damage to the equipment or fibre strands, and can stop your broadband service from working.

As the Fibre ONT infrastructure actually belongs to the local fibre company (Chorus in most regions, or Enable, Ultra Fast Fibre, or Northpower), they’ll need to get a technician trained in working with fibre and ONT’s out to your property to make the necessary changes.

How do I arrange for the ONT to be moved?

Simply get in touch with our support team and let them know where you’re wanting to move the ONT. The support team should be able to suggest a solution to your issue, and can also clarify what options you’ll have available.

If you do decide to go ahead with a request to move the ONT, they’ll be able to help you with that, and our team will then arrange with the local fibre company such as Chorus to get a technician scheduled to come to your address and carry out the work.

Will it cost anything to move my ONT?

When fibre is being installed to a residential property for the first time, normally the fibre install path and location of the ONT is agreed upon between the installing technician and the site contact (typically the property owner).

A standard fibre install will be done at no charge, as this is partly subsidised by the Government to encourage the uptake of ultra fast broadband.

If a homeowner subsequently requests to move the ONT however, this is a chargeable service.

Likewise if a business owner wishes to move their ONT that will also be chargeable.

Costs can vary depending on the complexity of what is being requested, but as a rule of thumb most ONT moves cost around $160+GST for consumer customers, and $365+GST for business properties.
